MICRONEEDLING (DERMAPEN)

Microneedling therapy is a very simple procedure that uses a hand-controlled device with tiny, shallow needles to puncture the outer layer of skin to create a controlled skin injury. This damage to the skin stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin.

Microneedling is used to rejuvenate the skin by filling in fine lines, resulting in an overall improvement in the texture and tightness. It can also be used to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. The natural growth of collagen will not happen instantly; it takes place over weeks and months. This treatment is not designed to be an ‘instant fix’, but is intended to improve the appearance of your skin in the long term. It is ideal for mild photodamaged skin and superficial atrophic scars. For more severely photo-aged skin or deeper scars, ablative laser is the preferred treatment modality.

One microneedling session generally takes 20 minutes. Anaesthesia is provided with ice, topical anaesthetic or local anaesthetic nerve blocks. Straight after the procedure, the skin appears red – similar to a mild sunburn. The skin returns to normal in a couple of days. The number of treatments required varies, but is typically between 4 and 8. Each treatment is spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

LASER TREATMENT: EXCEL® V+ BY CUTERA®

The excel V+ is the latest generation of high-powered, precise, dual-wavelength lasers, and Bay Dermatology is excited to be the first practice in South Australia to offer this advanced laser therapy. The groundbreaking excel V+ by Cutera® is considered the gold standard in treatment of vascular (red) lesions on the face and body. It removes visible veins and redness and improves the appearance of scars and vascular birthmarks. In addition to the treatment of vascular lesions, Excel V+ can be used to treat pigmentation and over time can improve fine lines and wrinkles thereby improving uneven skin tone.

WHAT MAKES THE EXCEL V+ BETTER THAN OTHER VASCULAR LASERS?

The excel V+ is the first laser to feature a micro-pulsed energy delivery system that’s so precise and powerful that it can treat deep lesions without affecting your surrounding, healthy skin.

The excel V+ utilises CoolView™ sapphire technology which has been demonstrated to reduce the discomfort associated with traditional vascular laser treatments and eliminates the need for numbing gel which can decrease efficacy of the laser. Excel V+ has a 16mm spot size which means that treatments are up to 5X faster than traditional vascular lasers.

WHAT DOES EXCEL V+ TREAT?

IS THERE ANY DOWN TIME?

You should expect mild redness and swelling following the treatment that can last up to a few days. Any pigmented lesions will darken over the next week or so and then flake off.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

Scarring, hypo- or hyper-pigmentation and infection are all potential risks but are extremely rare. 

TREATMENT INFO: Some lesions may resolve following a single laser treatment however 2-3 treatments are usually required, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, for maximal results. The cost depends on the area of skin to be treated. All laser treatments are performed by Bay Dermatology nurses.

REBATES: All red lesions on the face and neck visible from 3 metres attract a Medicare rebate if you have a valid referral from your GP.

LASER TREATMENT: LASER GENESIS AND GREEN GENESIS BY CUTERA®

Cutera’s laser Genesis (1064nm) and green genesis (532nm) are becoming two of the most popular skin rejuvenation laser treatments internationally. The treatment has no down time and there is very little pain. It stimulates collagen and elastin production in the dermis and reduces microvasculature and mild pigmentation over time. Over the course of 6-8 treatments, patients can expect an improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, redness and mild pigmentation.

Some refer to this treatment as the “the Hollywood facial” and it is often used before red carpet events.
